Fire Truck Sales

Its time to make my retirement internet official…I have submitted my retirement paperwork for October 2023.

I now find myself on a bit of a victory lap to conclude the last year of my EOD career…I’m feeling a bit reflective this morning at the 36000 feet as I head to Boston and Philly later this week for what will probably be my last ”Fire Truck Salesman” Convention of my career.

Considering the sensitivity of these conventions, forgive me for speaking in metaphors.

I did the bar napkin math and this will be my 91st and 92nd trip over 22 years. That includes two month-long rotations in DC, an NYC rotation, and trips to everywhere from Boston to Des Moines to Los Angeles.

I have discussed the finer points of fire engine design in countless awesome (Ellis Island) and not-great (NYC sewers) locales.

It’s been a good ride…but I’m ready to hang up my fire engine coloring book and go home. In some bit of cosmic coincidence/fate, I will end my run in Philly where I did my 1st trip in 2003 with Clay Sigler.

I’m hope the bar that I had my first illegal beer is still there because I am craving a Sam Adams…

r/Steve
